This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government. A Commitment to Address Youth Demands Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life. "Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized. The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the New Political Partnership According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed. Broader Government Consultations Taking Place In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests. Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
